Why I Write
What sustains my interest in an endeavor that feels like pulling teeth.
I am writing to know what I think.
I write to know how I think.
I write to express my thinking.
I write to read and revise my thinking.
I write to think more clearly.
I write to write more clearly about my clearer thinking.
I write to offer my thinking to the world in exchange for perspectives, alternatives, and the chance to revise my thinking.
I write to afford someone a new perspective and potentially change their thinking.
I write to afford myself a new perspective and potentially change my thinking.
I write to commune with the world.
I write to meet new people.
I write to become a new person, or at least newer.
I write to receive a validation that I matter.
I write to offer validation to others.
I write to be a part of a solution to perceived ills and obstacles in the lives of others.
I write to be less of an obstacle to other people’s lives.
I write to know myself and to re-create myself.
Everything changes, and everything flows, including myself. I write to chronicle that movement, as evidenced by my attention.
I write to help others pay attention. And I write to figure out what I am paying attention to.
Why do you write?
